Anlässlich des World Economic Forum lädt der Kulturplatz Davos am Samstag 21. Mai 2022 um 20 Uhr ein zur Wiedereröffnung der fotografischen Installation «Planetary Upgrade Piazza. Davos is a Verb» des Fotokünstlers Jules Spinatsch. Die textile Fotoinstallation in den Arkaden und im Kulturplatz, die grossformatigen Fotowürfel auf dem Arkadenplatz und im Foyer des Kulturplatz laden ein zum spielerischen Umgang mit der Davoser Verwandlungskunst. Plötzlich ist alles wieder anders, das fasziniert Jules Spinatsch. Die Davoser Travestie steckt jedesmal voller Überraschungen, besonders dieses Jahr: Nach der Corona-Pandemie tagt das WEF zum ersten Mal im Frühjahr – während ein Krieg in Europa wütet.
Die Ausstellung ist an der Vernissage am 21. Mai von 20 bis 21 Uhr und von Montag 23. bis Donnerstag 26. Mai 2022 geöffnet von 14 bis 18 Uhr.

Im Anschluss an die Vernissage findet ein Spaziergang durch die verwandelte Davoser Fassaden-Landschaft statt.

"Now that the pandemic is more or less over, the reopening fulfils on the one hand the original idea of the collision of the installation, which recreates the rebuilt promenade of 2020 - with the current conversion of the economic landscape of Davos into a world improvement square during the WEF 2022.
.
For the reopening, the installation was updated with two works in response to the global political situation.
.
In addition, a large painting depicting Michael Gorbachev now hangs in the foyer. It hung in the Scala restaurant of the Hotel Europe for about 20 years from 1987.
.
In addition to the political significance, personal memories are also added when it is now hung up again. At the time, we young people in Davos found it a political statement of new beginnings and a new world order. Especially in it: the prominent spot on the forehead, to which the painter gave the shape of the continents North and South America (West in mind). It is a reference to Gorbachev's talks with the then US President Ronald Reagan ("Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall", 1987, Berlin), which marked the opening towards the West, ushered in the downfall of the USSR and ended the Cold War. Gorbachev is honoured for this in our country, but Vladimir Putin interprets it as the greatest catastrophe of the 20th century. The dictator, who by the way was the opening speaker at the WEF in 2009 and was also allowed to continue giving speeches at the WEF after the annexation of Crimea in 2014, wants to undo this turning point by all means and help Russia to regain its former greatness and importance.

Since Erich Schmid unfortunately passed away unexpectedly recently, hanging the picture opposite his hotel Europe is also to be understood as a personal reminder of him, who in the 1980s provided us with the best bars and clubs in Switzerland: Carlo's, Scala, the Tonic Pianobar and of course the Cabanna.

The second new picture, the middle one of the three large textile pictures under the arcades, is also indebted to the current situation, and this too unintentionally undergoes an unavoidable update. I deliberately chose the militia vehicle in front of Ukraine House Davos, taken in January 2020, in the book design as a reference to the Crimean occupation and the country's tense situation (although it is a Swiss vehicle and although there is also a picture without it). This photograph can now no longer be interpreted merely as a diffuse threat, but imposes on one a gloomy prophecy that has unfortunately come true.

Jules Spinatsch zur Neueinrichtung seiner Ausstellung von 21. bis 26. Mai 2022

"Nachdem die Pandemie nun mehr oder weniger vorbei ist, erfüllt sich mit der Wiedereröffnung einerseits die ursprüngliche Idee der Kollision der Installation, welche die umgebaute Promenade von 2020 nachstellt – mit dem aktuellen Umbau der Wirtschafts-Landschaft-Davos in einen Weltverbesserungs-Platz während des WEF 2022.

Für die Wiedereröffnung wurde die Installation als Reaktion auf die weltpolitische Situation mit zwei Werken aktualisiert.
.
Im Foyer hängt nun zusätzlich ein grosses Gemälde, das Michael Gorbatschow zeigt und ab 1987 ungefähr 20 Jahre lang im Restaurant Scala des Hotel Europe hing.
.
Zur politischen Bedeutung kommen auch persönliche Erinnerungen dazu, wenn es nun wieder aufgehängt wird. Wir Davoser Jugendlichen fanden das damals ein politisches Statement des Aufbruchs und der Neuordnung der Welt. Besonders daran: der markante Fleck auf der Stirn, dem der Maler die Form der Kontinente Nord und Südamerika gab (Westen im Sinn). Es ist der Verweis auf die Gespräche von Gorbatschow mit dem damaligen US-Präsidenten Ronald Reagan ("Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall", 1987, Berlin), welche die Öffnung Richtung Westen markierten, den Untergang der UdSSR einleiteten und den Kalten Krieg beendeten. Gorbatschow wird dafür bei uns geehrt und von Wladimir Putin aber als grösste Katastrophe des 20. Jahrhunderts interpretiert. Diese Zeitenwende will der Diktator, der übrigens 2009 Eröffnungsredner des WEF war und auch, nach der Annektion der Krim 2014, seine Ansprachen auch weiterhin am WEF halten durfte, mit allen Mitteln rückgängig machen und Russland zu alter Grösse und Bedeutung verhelfen.

Da Erich Schmid leider kürzlich überraschend verstorben ist, ist das Aufhängen des Bildes gegenüber seines Hotels auch als persönliche Erinnerung an ihn zu verstehen, der uns in den 1980er Jahren mit den besten Bars und Klubs der Schweiz versorgte: Carlo’s, Scala, die Tonic Pianobar und natürlich das Cabanna.

Auch das zweite neue Bild, das mittlere der drei grossen textilen Bilder unter den Arkaden ist der aktuellen Situation geschuldet und auch dieses erfährt unbeabsichtigt eine unvermeidliche Aktualisierung. Das Miliärfahrzeug vor dem Ukraine House Davos, aufgenommen im Januar 2020, habe ich bei der Buchgestaltung absichtlich als Hinweis an die Krimbesetzung und die angespannte Lage des Landes gewählt (obwohl es ein Schweizer Fahrzeug ist und obwohl es auch ein Bild ohne dieses existiert). Diese Fotografie ist nun nicht mehr nur als diffuse Drohung zu interpretieren, sondern drängt einem eine düstere Prophezeiung auf, die leider wahr geworden ist."
